Thanksgiving Cooking - Special Education - Life Skills - Doubles - Halves

Thanksgiving is a great time of year for teachers to introduce students to a variety of cooking lessons in the classroom. Many students struggle with the concepts of doubling and halving and have a difficult time knowing how to proceed when asked to manipulate a recipe using those terms. This packet is a great introduction for students to help better understand the concepts of doubling and halving in a fun, Thanksgiving themed download!

Specifically designed for special education / life skills students, these task cards provide students with real-world questions and colorful visuals that keep them motivated to continue learning. Steps are scaffolded to help support all levels of learners in the classroom. I have even included TWO levels so you can easily differentiate for both low and high level students in your classes! 

How I Use This In My Classroom:

I start by dividing my class into two groups - my students who are high performers and those who need some more 1:1 support. I give my high performers the LEVEL B cards and my struggling students the LEVEL A cards. Depending on your class sizes, this could be a great small group activity or something that students participate on their own in independent centers (if you want, you can even laminate the task cards so they can be reused over and over again!). I make sure to start students off only by completing the doubling section first. When they show mastery, we move onto halving. Once both sections are completed, I shuffle them all up and have students complete the problems randomly to prove competency on their own!
