Life Skills - Real World Math - Measuring Spoons - Recipes - Cooking - Unit Four

So many students struggle with understanding how to correctly use measuring spoons in functional day to day cooking. If your students are anything like mine, numbers like "1/4" mean very little to them, and when presented with directions to build amounts using measuring cups, they struggle quite a bit.

With these task cards, students are presented with a variety of cooking scenarios where they will be asked to build amounts using the spoons given. In classrooms (and even everyday cooking!) you can't always find the perfect measuring spoon. That 1 TBSP. measuring spoon might be in the dishwasher, for example, and students would benefit from learning how to build amounts using other spoons (ex: 1/3 vs 1/2 vs 1/4).

These task cards are the perfect addition to supplement Unit One, Unit Two and Unit Three of my measuring cup series!

Although initially designed for special education, life skills students, ANY teacher looking to integrate some real world math into their classroom would benefit from the functional content these task cards provide! 

How I Use These In My Classroom: 

I laminate each of the task cards and provide students with vis a vis markers. I separate each level into four separate boxes (Level A, B, C, and D) and then track students as they progress up through each level. Students work 1:1 or in small groups working on these task cards until they reach 100% mastery on a specific level. Once they do, they are allowed to move up to the next level! I love to incorporate the data into IEP goals as well. Parents and students LOVE the real world applicability this lesson offers!
