Life Skills - Math - Money - Estimating Prices - Budget - Shopping - Special Ed
Many of my life skills students are not aware of the concept of estimating prices for their purchases. This often is a direct result of them not understanding the concept of place value to help support the process of reading numbers properly.
This unit is a great extension to my "Reading Numbers" unit. With this current unit (Estimating Prices), students practice selecting what price they think various items will be. Prices for cars, candy bars, computers, and clothing all range vastly and it is important for students to be able to differentiate between the small differences in where a decimal point is. This is an easy print and go activity that would be great in centers. Laminate it and use clothespins or vis a vis markers to select the correct choice to make this activity more hands on.
This would be great in a IEP students as well. An example of an IEP goal could be the following:
"By mm/dd/yyyy, when given 10 randomly selected items, Student X will increase his/her math skills from correctly estimating the price _ out of 10 times to correctly estimating the price _ out of 10 times, as measured by classroom based assessments"
The possibilities are truly endless!
