Life Skills - Job Skills - Cover Letter - GOOGLE - Special Education

This lesson is scaffolded to support students with creating their own individualized cover letter. I created this DIGITAL download out of a necessity to help teach my students a very important life skill that often gets overlooked in classrooms. Even though this would work for any teenager, I use it in my special education classroom to get resistant writers to start the writing process on a more personal level.

This cover letter activity is strongly centered around the writing process for STUDENTS. I included a framework that is relevant to them (ex: emphasizing a mock job hunt). This makes the activity so much more functional.

This activity is specifically formatted to be used with Google Drive and is compatible with Google Classroom. Google Drive is an amazing resource that many educators are now using as an interface to support 1:1 digital instruction in the classroom. I pair it up with Google Classroom (a free website) that allows me to digitally send each student in my class a copy of the worksheets that they later submit to me for grading. With this lesson, students are able to type directly into the colored boxes on the digital worksheet. It is an amazing paper-free process and the kids LOVE working on these worksheets on the computer.

A fully editable cover letter template is included with your purchase. All students have to do is change the highlighted text in green with the answers they write down on the included worksheets. At the end of the unit, I love to print a finalized copy of each student's cover letter. We add it to their portfolios and send a digital copy home as well. Many parents and students have gone on to say how helpful this activity has been long after they have graduated from my classroom.
