As a life skills teacher, I work hard to have my students practice real world skills they will need outside of the classroom. Many parents often would like to recreate these types of learning opportunities at home, but do not know how to do so. This DIGITAL LIFE SKILLS CHOICE BOARD was created to offer families guidance on how to support life skills instruction at home doing day to day tasks.
With your purchase, you get access to FOUR different choice boards with a total of 48 different real world learning activities. Each one could be an extension from a previously taught lesson or something that provides them with that extra real world context you might not be able to recreate within your own classroom. This is an excellent resource for both teachers and parents as it keeps the learning functional and age appropriate for students with disabilities. A spot is offered for parents or staff to write down the date the task was completed to help with IEP skill scaffolding. Every task offered on the choice board is an important life skill students could practice to increase their level of independence in the real world.
This activity is specifically formatted to be used with Google Drive and is compatible with Google Classroom. Google Drive is an amazing resource that many educators are now using as an interface to support 1:1 digital instruction in the classroom. I pair it up with Google Classroom (a free website) that allows me to digitally send each student in my class a copy of the worksheets that they later submit to me for grading. With this lesson, students get to interact directly with the digital worksheet by typing and moving objects right on it. It is an amazing paper-free process and the kids LOVE working on these worksheets on the computer.
By offering choice boards to your students, you can empower them to take control of their own learning by giving them the power of choice! A blank template is also provided in case families would like to create a board that is more individualized with goals that the student may be working on both in and outside of the classroom.
⭐️How to Use This In Your Classroom ⭐️
This is a great activity for traditional life skills students to complete as a weekly (or monthly) homework assignment. You can work with each student's family in deciding how many activities from the choice board you would like them to complete. You can design your individualized instruction around these activities as a precursor to having them completed in the real world (ex: using an ATM requires knowing what a PIN is, where ATMs can be found, what they are used for, etc.). This is a collaborative document that provides tons of specific opportunities for students, teachers, and parents to work together to increase real world living skills. Rotate through the choice boards and increase rigor (as deemed appropriate) by increasing the amount of activities to be done by a certain time. This is also an excellent opportunity to teach students about vocabulary skills.
