Every year, my students look forward to creating their own crystal ornaments in class. This download is a wonderful way to capture your students' attention and have them make something that is truly captivating from beginning to end. Although initially designed for special education students, any classroom could benefit from the visual, step-by-step directions provided in this purchase. These crystal candy cane ornaments are a hit each year and parents absolutely love them when kids bring them home.

This activity is specifically formatted to be used with Google Drive and is compatible with Google Classroom. Google Drive is an amazing resource that many educators are now using as an interface to support 1:1 digital instruction in the classroom. I pair it up with Google Classroom (a free website) that allows me to digitally send each student in my class a copy of the worksheets that they later submit to me for grading. With this lesson, students get to type their answers into the boxes directly on the screen. It is an amazing paper-free process and the kids LOVE working on these worksheets on the computer.

For these ornaments, you will need:

- Borax Powder

- String

- Cups

- Spoons

- Boiling Water

How You Can Use This In Your Classroom

I split my class into small groups and laminate the step by step picture directions. I have all the supplies set up at each table and an adult to monitor students as they make their ornaments. Students then work together collaboratively to make their crystal ornaments come to life. After they are done, the ornaments must rest overnight for the crystals to form. While students wait, they complete the variety of ELA activities provided. The next day, prepare to be fascinated with your beautiful creations!
