CLASSROOM PROCEDURES TO GO OVER THE FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES

Back to school season is upon us! During the first week of school, I spend a lot of time going over classroom procedures. Now, when I say the term "classroom procedures," it can be hard to list all the little things that we might take for granted which our new students may not know about.

I wanted to take some time in this blog and compile a list of topics you could consider going over with your students at the start of this school year.

  • Start / end times and daily schedule
  • Various entrance / exit spots on campus
  • Fire drills
  • Breakfast / lunch
  • Tardiness and absences
  • Hallway passes
  • Lining up information
  • Cell phone policy
  • Using shared classroom supplies (keeping things organized, returning things the way they were originally, task card boxes, etc)
  • Where to turn in assignments
  • How to utilize free time
  • Class jobs
  • Morning routine
  • Technology protocol (logging in, charged devices, on-task behavior)
  • What to do with unfinished work
  • Asking for help / getting a teacher's attention
  • Behavior management approach
  • Homework policy
  • Eating / drinking in class
  • Restroom locations
  • Nurse location and protocol
  • Recess
  • Bus information
  • Dismissal protocol

IDEAS TO TEACH PROCEDURES

  • Set up visual reminders around the classroom so students can easily reference them throughout the year to remember the proper way to do something.
  • The teacher or students can model the wrong way to do something. This one is very popular and engaging for students!
  • Have students draw the right and wrong way to do something. Create a class book.
  • Play a kahoot game going over the procedures - kids go insane over kahoot haha.

Hope you found this blog post helpful and got some new ideas for teaching classroom routines and procedures in your classroom!
